Elders Housing
Teslin, Yukon
2025
8,105sqft / 1 storey / 5 units

s.no architecture was engaged by one of the Yukon First Nations to develop the earlier adaptive housing prototypes into a specific project for Elders.  The project provides a variety of 1- and 2-bedroom units located within the central downtown core of the small First Nation community. Given the social isolation often experienced by Elder populations, the client requested a strong emphasis on communal aspects of the building. To encourage social interaction and community between residents, a social corridor, gathering space, large communal kitchen and outdoor amenity space were implemented. These programmatic elements aim to improve quality of life and develop lasting relationships between inhabitants. To respect the original site conditions, the project maintains a strong relationship with the ground, which is significantly sloped. The project features an interior low-sloped ramp and stairs to resolve the topography. These ramps finish at a point in the building that opens out directly onto an exterior deck which features a community fire pit for social gathering.
